Kuan Kreng Landscape Peatland Restoration Program
The Kuan Kreng Landscape Peatland Restoration Program encompasses Afforestation, Reforestation and Restorarion (ARR) and Wetlands Restoration and Conservation (WRC).
The Kuan Kreng Landscape Peatland Restoration Project (KKL Project) is a proposed carbon project situated in the southern part of Thailand. The Kuan Kreng Landscape (KKL) is considered to be the second largest peat swamp forest in the country, covering three provinces: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. The area has an outstanding natural significance with a high conservation value owing to its diverse plant and animal species. Unfortunately, it remains under constant threat from various factors, including land cover change, peatland drainage, and fires. These threats are likely to only increase in the future.
The overall goal of the project is to restore the peatland ecosystems while providing positive impacts to climate, community, and biodiversity. The project covers three primary interventions, including peatland restoration; afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR); and community-based integrated fire management program. In the absence of the project, this ecosystem would remain degraded, drained and at particularly high risk of fires.
